Drawings from the Middle East
“a terse history resonates with an inner tuning, filling me with the reflections of all listening ears”
These were the first words I found myself writing after viewing the mind sketches I drew while on tour this past spring. The mind sketches acted as a daily mediation- my hand, a pencil, and no expectation. That reach for my pad of paper most often occurred at a moment of impasse when I knew I had come across something that could not be easily explained. It was a way to map out all that was racing through my head, all that I was not yet ready to share or explicate. Looking back at these simple sketches reactivates my experience more than the countless photos I now have stored on my computer. I can recall more textures and nuances of the environment and my emotional state at the time, perhaps because the movement on the page is my own and not just a captured image of what I saw. All in all I can equate it most to what we do on stage– reimagining space and time through our own bodies in hopes of further understanding.
